The Hazards of Skinny Dipping

Synopsis:
This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

My Thoughts:

I believe this is one of the first times where I have been absolutely captivated by a book without turning a single page. Right from the book’s synopsis, I knew this was a book that I would have to read and that I would truly love.

So let’s begin there. This is not “a deep book about first loves or self-discovery”.

This is not a book that hinges on the tragedy filled past and the deeply horrifying secrets that many characters, these days, are apt to possess. It’s a book that centers around the simple and singular act of skinny dipping and all the events that follow. This book is a breath of fresh air.

From page one to the end, this book did not disappoint. Juliet as a narrator has such a unique voice and a feisty and quick wit that flows effortlessly. I instantly fell in love with her.

“I like you, Juliet. You’re feisty and fiery, and I just know we’re going to be good friends.”

Then there’s the guys: the upper classman/neighbor crush. the neighbor/crush’s younger brother. the frat guy/classmate/coworker. All extremely good looking. Each with their own pros and cons. Who will Juliet chose? I won’t be telling you here because I have to say....I really enjoyed not knowing the name of the ultimate love interest until I discovered him for myself. This allowed me to fall in love with him right along with Juliet. I got to enjoy the journey, going in blind....and that was a pretty special experience.

But “THE GUY”??....love love loved him. *dreamy sigh* That’s all I’ll say. Pick up the book. Here’s a little enticement:

He came to my rescue before Aaron could press for more details. “Do you want to dance?”

“I’d like that.”

He took my hand and guided me onto the dance floor as a slow song started. He held me close and led perfectly. Someone had taught him well. I leaned my head on his chest. I loved how strong it was. I’d never thought I’d want to be with a guy that built, but there was something so comforting about him.

The next song was fast, but [he] still kept me close. We danced for hours, only stopping to have a couple of drinks. We didn’t drink much, though. I don’t think either of us wanted to get drunk.

...“Are you ready to head back?”

The Final Verdict:

Alyssa Rose Ivy has produced a smash hit novel full of equal doses of humor and heart. More impressively, she has created an entirely unique story capable of evoking pure tears of happiness without once employing the very common tropes that have been currently plaguing the genre. Utterly wonderful, fun, and engaging, this book gave me more enjoyment than I’ve experienced in a long while.
