Synopsis:
“I like you.” His voice is low and soft, which I don’t deserve. I look away, down the rutted parking lot.

“Don’t... waste those words on me.”

He touches my cheek. “You just need someone to show you.”

“No.” I ease back again. “I don’t. So please, Torrin, stop trying to swoop in and save me. I don’t need saving.”

College freshman Quinn Montgomery will do anything to avoid the mistake her sister made—killing herself over a boy. But when she is forced into nude modeling at a local college to support her family after a bankruptcy, she begins to crack, just enough to let Torrin, the university’s top varsity oarsman, see that the real Quinn is not as feisty and unapproachable as she wants everyone to think. But letting someone in comes at a steep cost and, it turns out, Torrin is connected to Quinn’s family in more ways than she could ever imagine.

My Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised by this engaging and emotional tale.

Armed with an acerbic tongue and a don’t-mess-with-me attitude, Quinn does her best to free herself from the possibility of attachments. To free herself from the opportunity to love. She does not want to repeat her sister’s mistakes: falling in love, suffering heartbreak, and ultimately ending her life.

She is put to the test when Torrin enters the picture. His caring and his perseverance start to break cracks in her armor until she has no choice but to let him in.

My eyes follow the plane until it disappears into the sun-lit horizon then I turn to stare at him. Our faces are close. I-Could-Kiss-Him close. And if I were a normal girl this might be the moment where I lean in and press my lips to his. I try to imagine it. Kissing him. His lips would be soft. His hand would caress my cheek, my hair, my neck. My heart would flitter in my chest and it would be amazing and perfect and—

Forget it. I’m not a normal girl. I press my shoulder further into the grass.

While the connection that Torrin has to Quinn’s past was not a surprise, I was still drawn into the story and wondered how it would play out. What was a surprise were several intricacies to the plot that brought depth and heart wrenching “aha” moments to the first person narrative.

Though it took me a little while to truly connect to these characters, by the end, I wanted nothing more than to find out more about what happens to them past the last page.

The Final Verdict:

With a genuineness of spirit and heart, Brooklyn Skye has created a wonderful debut novel of love and forgiveness. A unique premise coupled with characters that wiggle their way into your heart make this a book worthy of a read. I can’t wait to see what Skye has to offer up next.

About the Author:

Brooklyn Skye is just your average awkward girl who's obsessed with words. She grew up in a small California town where she quickly realized writing was an easy escape from small town life.
