Subject to Change by Alessandra Thomas
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: June 25th, 2013

Synopsis:
Joey made her dad a deathbed promise that she would become a doctor, and dedicate herself to fighting the very cancer that took his life. There’s just one problem -three years into her pre-med classes, she's struggling to stay on top of the curve, let alone prove she's dazzling enough to earn a spot in an Ivy League medical school. In a Hail Mary move, she throws a basic Business 101 class into her semester schedule, banking on a perfect score to boost her GPA.

That is, until she’s paired for a final project with Hawk, the bartending, motorbike-riding, gorgeously bedheaded loser who falls asleep in class and communicates in one-word sentences. Hawk does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, which sets Joey on edge – in every possible way. As they get to know each other, her urge to scream at him is curbed only by her fantasies of tearing his clothes off. Soon those fantasies become reality, and Joey realizes Hawk makes her feel more fully herself than any of the rich boys her mother and sorority sisters approve of.

But the promise to her father hangs over her head, and the harder Joey tries to succeed in her chosen career, the faster everything falls into a hopeless tailspin of bad grades, broken promises and guilt. It doesn't help to have Hawk sitting like a devil on her shoulder, insisting she should be free to live however she wants to live - like he does.

The only thing Joey knows is that her neatly organized life is crushing her - and Hawk's bad attitude might be the only thing that can save her.

My Thoughts:

Struggling down a path and to a destiny that has been put upon her by a deathbed promise to her late father, Joey is dismayed to discover that all that she has worked so hard for could be derailed by her new slacker business class partner. Though, an extremely good looking one at that. Hawk is perpetually late, if he deigns to show up at all, sleeps in class, and always seems to MIA when she needs him. After a couple chance meetings and a bit of thawing in their mutual frostiness towards each other, Joey and Hawk discover that maybe their original impressions weren’t completely accurate.

I had no chance to think about just how bold that was because when their ice blue color flashed at me, it felt like a knife in my chest and the thrill of riding a rollercoaster all at the same time. I thought eyes like that only happened on models and movie stars in magazine photo shoots and, even then, only because they were Photoshopped.

It was so far beyond cheesy, but this guy’s eyes took my breath away.

This is a story of two very broken people bogged down by the expectations of others. Through their connection with each other and their growing understanding of one another, they begin to forge a new path... to discovering themselves.

Being with Hawk-- or around Hawk or in a fight with Hawk -- made me question every single thing about myself and my life. And I didn’t know whether I loved it or hated it.

The Final Verdict:

Alessandra Thomas has written yet another engaging and heartfelt novel. Though I found both characters to be frustrating at times, it is because they are flawed, they make mistakes, they act irrationally....in other words, they act like real people. This is not a glossed up love story. There are real issues at play, and a lot of growth in the characters. The friction, both out of anger and passion, lights up the pages and makes this a quick and immersing read.

And now, come along with me as I go to meet Hawk!

As I enter the local hot spot, Hawk’s Bar and Restaurant, I’m instantly enveloped in a sense of warmth and comfort. Though it’s packed with people, it’s not overwhelming. It’s homey and inviting.

I scan the restaurant looking for my tall, dark, and handsome interview subject. My eyes flit from person to person when suddenly my eyes catch on him striding towards me, and I freeze. Wow. Just. Wow.

Stopping in front of me, Hawk awkwardly rubs the back of his neck and holds out his hand in introduction.

Hawk: Hey, you must be Christine. I don’t know how interesting an interview I’ll be, but ...well, let’s get started, huh?

Christine: So nice to meet you! Don’t worry, this won’t be too bad. And my readers are dying to hear more about you.

Hawk just give a small smile as he leads me to a table in the back.

Christine: This place looks fantastic! How do you feel having accomplished all of this?

Hawk: *smiles* Ah…I like it, you know? It’s not exactly what my Dad would have pictured for his bar, I’m sure, but this feels more like me – more like what I want to be doing. And I sure as hell am making more money than he did.

Christine: It’s a fantastic achievement having spawned from a class project. That’s the class where you first met Joey. What was your first impression of her?

Hawk: Honestly? I thought she was just another rich prissy bitch that never would have set foot near me. And the truth is, she probably wouldn’t have if she didn’t have to. But I’m damn sure she did.

Christine: What would you say was your proudest achievement of this year?

Hawk: Definitely getting into the business school. I never thought of myself as a businessman type, you know? But Joey helped me see that it would help me understand how to make this bar successful.

Christine: Without giving anything away...what is one regret that you have? One thing that you wish you could change?

Hawk: Aw, geez. Well, I guess I regret not being more involved with my little sister, Olivia, when she was a younger teen. We were both trying to deal with some tough stuff and I just sort of focused on myself. Even though our relationship is getting better now, and she’s doing better, I wish I had been there for her. I wonder if she would have grown up any calmer.

Christine: I think you're doing a great job. I really love the person she is growing into. On to something a little happier...can you tell me what you wrote about for your application for school?

Hawk: Wow, you are ALL about the personal questions! Yeah, I wrote about how I learned that something that seems like an obstacle can really steer you onto the right course – the course you were supposed to be on. I was really overwhelmed when I inherited the bar from my dad, and it didn’t turn out like he would have imagined it, but it’s turned out to be a great opportunity for me. I want to make the most of it.

Christine: *sheepish grin* SORRY!! My readers are dying to know all about you! But thank you for answering my nosy questions. *cough* here's another...Tell us something about you? Something that we might not know already?

Hawk: I’m obsessed with Saturday morning shows from when I was a kid. Pokemon and Power Rangers – I can’t live without ‘em.

Christine: Dude, *fist bump*. Which Power Ranger did you want to be? hahaha…Did you crush on the pink ranger like all the other boys?

Hawk: I wanted to be the red ranger, obviously. And noooo the pink ranger was too prissy. I wanted the yellow one.

*excuse me while I fall in love just a little bit more*

Suddenly Hawk’s attention seems to be caught over my shoulder. I glance back and see that Joey has come out from the kitchen and is laughingly chatting with Olivia.

I smile to myself and Hawk reluctantly turns back to me.

Christine: Okay, let’s finish this interview off. Time for a little quick fire/word association:

- Celebrity crush?

Ahhh…right. *lowers voice* Rachel Bilson. But don’t tell Jo or she’ll think I don’t like blonds.

- Favorite thing in the world?

What kind of a question is that? My girl, of course!

- Biggest pet peeve?

Cars that are assholes on the road. Let me drive my damn bike in peace.

- Best memory?

Hiking around Valley Forge with my dad when I was a kid. I didn’t worry about much then.

- Olivia?

*laughs* pain in the ass.

- Joey?

beautiful, inside and out.

Christine: And that’s it, Hawk! That wasn’t too bad, now was it?

Hawk: No! It was actually nice to get off my feet for a second. Even if I do feel like I’ve been to the damn shrink now. So…thanks? I guess?

Christine: *snicker* And how do you feel about that? *wink* sorry sorry! Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. SERIOUSLY!  Before you head off to your woman...can I get a hug? I’m a hugger.

Hawk: Aw, of course. Come here. I’ll give you a big bear hug.

Christine: Say hi to Joey for me! And...*stomach growls* any way I can get some of those famous potato skins? I’ve been craving them since I first heard how well you make them.

Hawk: Hey, we’re friends now! Anything for you. I’ll make some up right now. You want beer or soda with those?

All I can do is nod and he walks away with a smile. I don't think he hears me when I wistfully whisper, "You are the perfect man..."

Ten Tiny Breaths
by K.A. Tucker

Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

*RELEASE DAY* Excerpt + Giveaway - Lyla Payne's BY REFERRAL ONLY

THEN go use the buy links to grab this one up, because it is INCREDIBLE! Stay tuned for next week FRIDAY for my review plus a special Guest post involving 10 things you want to know about the dreamy Scottish hottie, Cole!

By Referral Only by Lyla Payne
Publication Date: July 2nd, 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary
Synopsis:
After being unceremoniously dumped freshman year because of her family’s “new money” status, Ruby Cotton has taken care not to put her heart on the line. No matter how enticing Emilie and Quinn make it look, relationships are scary and hard—while a string of flings is easy and fun. That’s what Ruby wants. Easy and fun. The only problem is, when it comes to satisfaction in the sack, most of the boys at Whitman are nothing but pretty window dressing and false advertising.

Ruby takes it upon herself to make campus life more fulfilling, creating a referral database that allows female students to rate their sexual experiences, thereby informing girls of what they’re getting into before agreeing to a date.

When her acting partner, Liam Greene, finally shows some interest, Ruby figures she won’t need to utilize the helpful gossip. He’s handsome, fun, and most importantly, not a guy she’d ever fall for hard enough to let him break her heart.

Not only that, but dating Liam gives Ruby the perfect excuse to say no to Cole Stuart.

As a star swimmer and heir to honest-to-God Scottish royalty, Cole sits at the top of Whitman’s A-list—but he’s also the lowest rated referral on Ruby’s website. The ratings make rejecting his repeated requests for a date a no-brainer, but her real reason for avoiding Cole runs deeper than a string of unsatisfied exes.

He’s gorgeous, he oozes sweetness and charm, and the electricity between them could power half of Whitman, but Ruby knows it will only last until his family or friends convince him she’s not good enough.

Before she knows it she’s falling anyway, waiting for the other shoe to drop but clinging to a tentative hope that Cole might be as different as he seems. When the secret behind his low ratings comes to light, that hope is torn apart, and Ruby wonders if she was right to give him her heart…and whether she has the strength to let him keep it.

And now, the excerpt!!

“You know what’s sad, is that I have a better story than that,” Ginny interrupted, rescuing her roommate from yet another lecture from me about the follies of saving herself for a someday guy who would not fucking appreciate it.

“I do not see how that’s possible. I just made out with a twenty-one-year old guy whose penis doesn’t work.”

“Hear me out. Freshman year I was having sex with this guy and he quit in the middle. Like, didn’t finish, just stopped, said he was really hungry, put his clothes on, and left.”

“That is an unprecedented turn of events,” Larissa mused. “Did you hear from him again?”

“He texted to tell me some dumbass story about the person in line in front of him at Taco Bell, but other than that, nope.” Ginny pulled her long, dark brown hair into a bun. “Like, what is that? He didn’t even finish.”

“And it goes without saying that you didn’t either,” I observed dryly.

Larissa snorted. “You do not even want to know how long it’s been since a guy coaxed an orgasm out of me. You’d think it was easier to wrestle a Coachella invite away from a Kappa.”

“Where did you find this loser?” I wanted to make sure and steer clear, not that I hadn’t managed to find plenty of dick nuggets at Whitman on my own. Guys who slobbered, or came before I could even think about it, or thought it was cute to sneak out before dawn.

“Frat party. Seemed totally normal until he ditched sex for fast food at one in the morning.”

If I really thought about it, none of this seemed all that funny. Emilie and Quinn apparently had some kind of mind-blowing sexual connection that I needed to hire Gandalf to find. Guys had it so easy; they needed somewhere to stick it for five minutes and they got off, went home, and bragged to their friends over cheap beer or whatever. I would bet my mother’s entire fitness empire that they weren’t sitting around the frat house whining about how disappointing any of us were in bed.

“I ran into Chaney doing the walk of shame a few minutes ago, and she looked like she’d been through a horror show at the hands of that Scottish Lambda Phi she’s been out with a few times.”

“Cole Stuart?” Ginny nodded. “He’s hot, and that accent makes my panties just evaporate into thin air, but it seems like I’ve heard other girls complain, too.”

Girls knew all the dirty secrets. If campus relationships were a stage production, we were definitely in charge of casting. We should be auditioning these idiots, or at least asking for resumes. “Life would be so much easier if guys had to wear nametags with their shortcomings printed on them so we all knew what we were getting into.”

They all laughed at my suggestion, trying to one-up each other adding to my stupid idea.

“Fucks like a rabbit.”

“Doesn’t go down.”

“Nipple abuser.”

“Slobbers in ears.”

Ginny shrieked. “That sounds like a Native American name!”

The potential monikers grew sillier until none of us could talk over the sound of our laughter, only Brooke sitting quietly, gaping at us in horror. Clearly, the guys at Whitman were totally slacking in the bedroom pleasure department, probably because they were all rich and mostly good-looking, which meant they’d never had to work for it. I, for one, wasn’t interested in increasing my number or saying another twelve Hail Marys without some kind of assurance.

That thought gave me an idea. It might have been as stupid as the nametags, but this one didn’t require a method for tackling boys and forcibly attaching stickers bearing their relationship failings. No one knew what belonged on those tags better than the girls who had been forced to endure their sloppy advances, and if I knew one thing about girls, it was that they loved gossip.

If flings were what I had to look forward to, why not expect them to be decent?

I said goodnight and wandered across the hall to my room, gears grinding in my brain as I brushed my teeth and slipped into my pajamas. The best approach seemed to be going with what I knew, which meant starting where I started every time an audition announcement went up for a new production, either in the school theatre or community—a résumé. Complete with referrals.

About the Author:
I’ve long had a love of stories. A few years ago decided to put them down on the page, and even though I have a degree in film and television, novels were the creative outlet where I found a home. I’ve published Young Adult under a different name, but when I got the idea for Broken at Love (my first New Adult title), I couldn’t wait to try something new – and I’m hooked. In my spare time I watch a ton of tennis (no surprise, there), play a ton of tennis, and dedicate a good portion of brain power to dreaming up the next fictitious bad boy we’d all love to meet in real life.

VOTING BEGINS TONIGHT! 12a EST #NACrushTourney - #TeamTrent Advocate Post!

Here's my full Advocate post (posted over at http://www.naalley.com)

VOTING START IN....

Hello lovely New Adult readers! I’m Christine from i *Heart* Big Books (and i cannot lie...) and I’m ecstatically, enthusiastically, and gleefully here to tell you why TRENT EMERSON from K.A. Tucker’s phenomenal NA debut, TEN TINY BREATHS, deserves to be crowned the winner of this first ever NA Crush Tourney!

Not only one of the smash hits of 2012, but one of my favorite novels EVER, Ten Tiny Breaths was an emotional, uplifting, and life-altering novel that, literally, excuse the pun, took my breath away. And Trent....well, Trent was an endlessly complex, gorgeous, swoon inducing, good guy/bad boy hero to the nth degree. After Trent...I was never the same...

So, without further ado, let’s get down to the Ten (not so) Tiny Reasons...why Trent should be your NA Crush Tourney winner of 2013:

Seize them. Feel them. Love them.

ONE... Physically, he is beyond gorgeous. He is the whole lust inducing six foot-three package of endlessly blue eyes, lickable dimples, and a chiseled, well-muscled physique, (eight-pack included).

My breath hitches at the sight of him and those deep dimples he flashes shamelessly. It’s been more than two weeks since I bumped into him here, yet seeing him instantly ignites a fire within me.

TWO... His eyes. His eyes deserve to stand on their own, not only for their color and their beauty, but more so, for the depth of emotion and feeling that he is able to convey through them.

The air leaves my lungs in a swoosh, and I’m left staring at a set of deep dimples and the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen—cobalt rings with light blue on the inside.... The blue floors, the rusty old machines, the walls, everything around me vanishes under the weight of his gaze as it strips me of my protective bitch coat, yanking it clean off my body, leaving me bare and vulnerable in seconds.

**********

When he peers up at my face, I have to close my eyes. I can’t handle the look in his. It’s full of heat and desire and intentions.

THREE... He infuses every action with undeniable and effortless sex appeal. Whether training at a fighter’s gym, or riding his motorcycle, and even when doing laundry, it is tangible and unavoidable.

A gentle fingertip pushes my chin up until I’m looking at Trent’s earnest eyes. “I’ll keep you safe, Kacey. Just hold on to me. Tight.” I let him place the helmet on my head and gently fasten the strap around my chin, his deft fingers brushing my skin in a way that sends shivers through my body.

**********

I watch the muscles in his shoulders shift as he pours detergent into the machine. Who knew doing laundry could be sexy. When he turns to me and winks, I jump….

For two years, I haven’t given anyone the time of day. Now, here I am, day one in our new life, and I’m ready to straddle this guy on the washer.

FOUR... Yet, at the same time, he radiates a soul-deep kindness and sweetness, making little girls (and big girls as well) believe in fairy tales...that she could be a princess and he, her prince.

From behind his back, Trent produces a bunch of five pink roses. He kneels on one knee to present it to her. I hear the collective sigh from all the grown women in the group, including myself.

“Thank you for inviting me,” he says. She clutches the flowers in both her tiny hands, and then gazes at Trent with wide, starry eyes that don’t blink for far too long. Her cheeks flush and I can tell this is the moment where Mia falls in love with him. This tall stranger has just become her life-long prince.

FIVE... Trent is anything but one-dimensional. He is a mass of contradictions that make him both intriguing and appealing all at once.

He stops what he’s doing to glance over his shoulder, blazing eyes leveling me with a look that makes me want to do things to him, for him, with him. His attention drags down the length of my body, unashamed. This guy is a contradiction. One second sweet, the next second brazen. A mind-blowing hot contradiction.

**********

He skates between nice guy and bad boy so fluidly, I never seem to catch the transition

SIX... He makes the simple and often overlooked act of holding hands become something remarkable and special. Showing that even through the smallest touch, one can comfort, love, and heal.

When my fingertips graze his and warmth spreads through me, that dread evaporates.

His warmth. His life.

Closing my eyes, I slide my hand further in, slipping my fingers between his and curling them around. My lips part in a small gasp when his grip tightens over mine. He doesn’t move closer though. He doesn’t try anything or say anything. We stand like that, in the doorway, our hands entwined, for what feels like forever.

SEVEN... He doesn’t want perfect...no one is perfect. He wants Kacey, who is real, imperfect, and broken. He wants her just the way she is.

But Trent … there’s something different about him, and I don’t have to think hard to see it. Something about the way he takes over a room, the way he looks at me, like he has already identified and can disarm every one of my defense mechanisms with no effort, like he sees through them to the disaster lying beneath.

And he wants it.

**********

“You hate me, don’t you? You must hate me. I can’t help it. I’m broken.

Trent squeezes me close to him. “I don’t hate you. I could never hate you. Give me your heart, Kacey. I’ll take everything that comes with it.”

EIGHT... Yet, even though he will take Kacey, broken pieces and all, he wants to help her, to save her, make her smile...and make her whole.

His dimples are in full force now. “I want to make you smile. For real. Always. We’re going to go for dinners, and see movies, and walk on the beach. We’ll go hang-gliding, or bungee jumping, or whatever you want to do. Whatever makes you smile and laugh more.” His fingers toy with my bottom lip. “Let me make you smile.”

**********

“I’d fix it all for you if I could. You know that, right?” He whispers. I wonder if he’s talking about my scars or the last four years of my life.

“Yes,” is all I say. Yes to all of it.

**********

“I’ll make you whole again, Kacey. I promise you, I will,” he whispers. And then his mouth covers mine.

NINE... He believes in “forever”.

“And I will. From now on, Kacey. I will. I will devote every day for the rest of our lives to making you happy. I promise.”

**********

“Forever’s a long time.”

Trent’s arms squeeze around me. “Forever’s not long enough when it’s with you.”

And finally...

TEN... Trent is as essential as breathing.
A Trent void. It throbs like a deep ache through every fiber of my being. I crave his presence, his body, his voice, his laugh, his touch, his everything.

I need him.

I need Trent.

**********

He’s like ripe watermelon after a lifetime of thirst. He’s like air after years under water.

He’s like life.

Well, there you have it readers! Ten (not so) Tiny Reasons why TRENT is your pick for the Ultimate New Adult Crush!

In the end, it boils down to this: Trent is the real deal. The full package. He is stunningly attractive on both the inside and out. It's a lonely business trying to find out who you are, especially when you're afraid you won't like what you discover.
